Wondering why big-brand AV is so expensive
in many hotels?

“(Staging Connections CEO Michael Gardner) blamed the disappointing first-half performance on one-off costs…as well as higher commission fees linked to the recontracting of long-term venue services arrangements.”

Australian Financial Review, 31 March 2008

With big brand in-house audiovisual services, an ever-increasing percentage of your audiovisual budget goes directly to the hotel as commission. This creates upward pressure on the price you pay.

You are under no obligation to use a hotel audiovisual service. You are perfectly entitled to engage your preferred audiovisual supplier.

If a hotel sales contract demands that you use the in-house supplier, and you would prefer to use an AV company that offers a fairer deal, simply ask for the line to be deleted or you may take your business elsewhere.

You may also draw their attention to Section 47 of the Australian Trade Practices Act, covering Third Line Forcing. This occurs when a supplier places a condition on the supply of its goods or services that the customer must acquire goods or services of a particular type from a third person nominated by the supplier. This anticompetitive practice is a form of exclusive dealing that is prohibited outright by the Act.

Scene Change provides venue audiovisual services, and we will never attempt to force clients into using a compulsory service. We believe in winning work on our own merits, and support the right of every client to free choice in AV suppliers.

Our venue services offer a strong focus on new technology, and no unexpected surcharges or consumable fees. Our commercial arrangements with the venue leave room for flexibility and a fair deal for clients.
